Wired News: Outsourcing to the Heartland

So, what is really this about? is it about protection of the internal market, stoping the globalization, or just fight for survival?
Kind of odd, that the country which is pushing everyone to go into a complete open market is having a puch for local "re-allocation"

Really Cool

CellTrack Client

CellTrack is free and open source utility for tracking the location of GSM cellular phones. Currently some smartphones running Windows Mobile are supported.

A free CellTrack client can be downloaded and installed on your phone. This runs in the background and collects information on the GSM cell towers in your phone's vicinity. This information can be used to estimate the geographical location of your phone.

The client can be configred to automatically perform certain actions when the phone location changes. For example, CellTrack can be configured to automatically switch your phone to silent when entering work, or to divert all calls to your home line when you are at home.

Biculturalism

From Joel on Software, amazing views... and actually quite true... or at least some of them:

"Suppose you take a Unix programmer and a Windows programmer and give them each the task of creating the same end-user application. The Unix programmer will create a command-line or text-driven core and occasionally, as an afterthought, build a GUI which drives that core. This way the main operations of the application will be available to other programmers who can invoke the program on the command line and read the results as text. The Windows programmer will tend to start with a GUI, and occasionally, as an afterthought, add a scripting language which can automate the operation of the GUI interface. This is appropriate for a culture in which 99.999% of the users are not programmers in any way, shape, or form, and have no interest in being one."

Clever points of view...

I always find quite odd the way people think about the "digital era" and which paths will take us to the right ports... This iste have a few ideas of how the digital technology divides a nation: http://www.pbs.org/digitaldivide/index.html

Get Eclipse aDesigner With Enhanced GUI
Thursday, July 14 2005 @ 04:00 PM EST
Contributed by: gham

The aDesigner is a disability simulator that helps Web designers ensure that their pages are accessible and usable by the visually impaired. This is done by using Voice browsers and screen readers, reading aloud the text on Web pages. The new release of aDesigner is using Eclipse SWT 2.1.3 and has an enhanced GUI and contains several major bug fixes.

Slashdot Is Blogging Journalism

Posted by CmdrTaco on Tuesday March 08, @05:00PM

from the well-yes-it-definitely-might-be-sometimes dept.

An anonymous reader writes "In the wake of the judge's refusal to extend journalist protections to Think Secret in its case against Apple, the Net is abuzz with commentaries coming to its defense. MacInTouch points to three of them, from CNET's Declan McCullagh, MP3 Newswire's Richard Menta and grassroots journalism pundit Dan Gillmor. All agree that Apple went too far with its case and question the court's decision that Web journalists don't count."

People can be such an idiot

Well, i have quite an experience yesterday, I had a nice conversation on a forum with some people discussing why Spam or just commercial information was not allow in it...
Unfortunately, people can be such an idiot from time to time... How someone can break rules for their own benefit without caring about the thinking of the rest of the people, or even the netiquette is amazing.

the deal is this, I want to sell something and I will publich it wherever I want... it is really annoying and at the same time, very stupid..

Whatever, I needed to release some sh*@!

Well, I guess that only rich people think abou risks, while everybody else talk about not taking them...

The Power of the stars!

Sorry this time is in Spanish...

Paying the cost to be the boss... Great Song, innit?

by
B.B. King
recording of 1967
from
King Of The Blues 4 CD Box Set (MCA MCAD4-10677)
You act like you to don't wanna listen,
when I'm talking to you
You think you outta be my baby,
anything you wanna do
You must be crazy, baby,
you just gotta be out of your mind
As long as payin' I'm the bills, woman,
I'm payin' the cost to be the boss
I'll drink if I wanna,
and play a little poker too
Don't you say nothing to me,
as long as I'm taking care of you
As long as I'm working baby,
and payin' all the bills
I don't want no mouth from you,
about the way I'm supposed to leave
You must be crazy, woman,
you just gotta be out of your mind
As long as I'm footin' the bills,
I'm paying the cost to be the boss
Now that you got me,
you act like you are a shame
You don't act like my woman,
you just using my name
I tell you I'll gonna handle all the money,
and I don't wanna no back talk
'Cause if you don't like the way I'm doing,
just pick up your things and walk
You must be crazy baby,
you just gotta be out of your mind
As long as paying the bills,
I'm paying the cost to be the boss

Funny Answering machine messages

Funny Answering Machine Messages...

Roses are red, some willows weep, please leave your message, after the beep

"Hi, we aren't in at the moment, if you are trying to sell us something please start speaking now and hang up at the beep, everyone else start speaking at the beep and hang up when you've finished."

I'm not here, so say goodbye, or leave a message, and I'll reply

Like Barney (the purple dinosaur):
I'll call you, cause you called me. We're the ______ family. So leave your
name and number at the tone. Sorry that we're not at home.

"Hi, you have reached the Borg collective. Please leave your name and star system and we'll assimilate you as soon as we can."

"Hey guess who this is? You guessed it. Guess what you have to do now? you
guessed it. Guess what's next? You guessed it..."

Roses are red, violets are blue,
Sugar is sweet, and so are you
The roses have wilted, the violets are dead,
The sugar bowl's empty, and so is your head
The roses stink, sorta like sheep
But leave your name, number, and message after the beep
The roses are molding, the violets are rotten
And I might call you back, if I haven't forgotten

Why people don't read?

It's a fact, people don't read, even if you write a beautiful set of "FAQs", nobody will ever read them, it is much easier to send an email, and ask again...

So annoying... feels like loosing time...

Orkut...

I was telling you the last time about orkut... it is great as a social tool... you make new friends and learn from another people points of view.. very interesting...

Some comments about it:
http://searchenginewatch.com/searchday/article.php/3302741

But, basically, why do we want to share? Is it just our social nature?

Don't know as usual... but I like it...

and I keep adding more...

one scary...

Had anyone check on zaba? yes, check on http://www.zabasearch.com/ amazing, you can get details about people leaving in the US, without paying for it, and with a simple search... scary as well...

Funny

This IS funny, I just got a message that a friend receive my CV ( a 5 years old version)... it seems that some companies are selling their old HR database, and I was into one of them.. hehehehe...

Well, you never know, it might come a good job out of it ;)

Talking about Sandwiches....

Talking about snacks: the first association is a sandwich, and the origin is as British as it could be. The name refers to the Earl of Sandwich who lived 1718 to 1792.

The British have always been betting and gambling buffs. It's in accordance with their idea of sports and sportsmanship - basically a British philosophy.

But the Earl of Sandwich overdid it even by British standards. During his gambling days, taking meals was considered by him as highly unwelcome interruptions. He therefore invented a kind of meal not requiring him to exchange the gambling table for the dinning table: sandwiches.

HA!

More... yes, I'm busy in here!!

Hey another thought.. Have you ever been trying to open the car and someone just passed by? I always think they must be thinking I'm stealing the car... so I wave or say hi, so they look some other way...

Browsing on the web, I found a few other good resources, so I added them to the link section opn the left >>>>

Besides, I found some other stuff which is interesting:

www.arenin.com.ar Very smart site, they make money and provide a service to argentines in UK (bit short minded to name it Argentines in England... I'm in Scotland and use them anyway)
http://www.sapodeotropozo.com.ar/ Same idea a bit older, and a bit crazier... I like it!
www.mercado-argentina.com Great products, a bit expensive, but good products.. food, wines (great ones to impress), etc etc...
http://www.buenayre.co.uk/ Great place, and great food...

One more, for spanish speakers only, have you ever try www.periodismo.com a great resource full of TV, Newspapers, radios, etc...

Last one, check on www.la2x4.gov.ar ... great Tango !!!

cheers! I'll keep getting more info...

.gov.au Guide to Open Source Software

I always thought that government agencies should use OSS, let face it, no government should be tied to propietary companies

At least they think the same at Oz!

Happy about it....

2nd Thoughts... I got to excited, and forgot to google a bit, and read all the comments... anyhow, looks like the company providing the OS CMS, is not so OS as we thought... too bad: http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/software/0,2000061733,39190311,00.htm

Anyway, hope it changes for open and good....

DSpace?

Have you ever try www.dspace.org... looks like a great project...
I'm currently working with it... it is quite nice, and seems to be more stable than other implementations.

Playing with it a workmate show me www.plone.org, it is amazing, based on Zope (Python) it doesnt even needs a web server, it just the CM you have dream of, and it gives you enough flexibility...

I'll try to keep this up top date.

Another place...

Another virtual place... have you ever try www.orkut.com? it is great...
Probably you will need someone to invite you (you always need someone to invite you for a party...), but one you are in... oh, boy! there are so many cultures (mainly brazilians and someone else) that every post become a discussion... very nice...

Let me know if you want to come to play...

Cheers!

Ubuntu
